BIRTH CERTIFICATES/BIRTH CARDS

Q. What is the difference between a Birth Certificate and a Birth Card?
A. The Birth Certificate contains additional detailed information. A Birth Card is a short abbreviated form.

Q. How long does it take to print the Birth Record?
A. The Birth Record is printed within a few minutes of applying.

Q. Can anyone purchase my Birth Record?
A. No, only the applicant or an immediate family member, with pictured ID can purchase your Birth Record.

Q. I was born in another state; can you print my Birth Record?
A. No, we can only generate Birth Records for individuals who were born in the state of Louisiana.

Q. Can you print Death Certificates?
A. No, we cannot print death certificates. You will need to contact Vital Records.

MARRIAGE LICENSES

Q. Do we both have to come in to get the marriage license?
A. No, only one applicant needs to come in with both parties information.

Q. Do we have to take a blood test to get married?
A. No, blood work is no longer required.

A. How long is a marriage license good for?
A. An unused Marriage license is valid for only 30 days and there is a 72 hour waiting period once issued.

Q. If I am not getting married in Union Parish can I still obtain the license there?
A. Yes, the license can be purchased and used anywhere in the state of Louisiana.

PROTECTIVE ORDERS

Q. How do I apply for a protective order?
A. You can contact the DART office at 318-368-6181 and they will have a representative available for assistance. Also, you can come to the office of the Clerk of Court to receive a form.

Q. Who can receive a protective order?
A. Family members: spouses, former spouses, parents & children, stepparents & stepchildren, foster parents & foster children, grandparents & grandchildren.

Household members: person of opposite sex presently or formerly living with defendant as spouse.

Parent, adult household member or D.A: on behalf of minor child or alleges incompetent adult.

Dating partner: person who is or has been in a social relationship of a romantic or intimate nature.
